COLLEGEVILLE, WILLIAMSPORT AND PHILADELPHIA, PA – The shrinking economy has affected virtually every walk of life, and the dentistry field has not been exempt.
More dentists are branching out by taking continuing education courses to provide dental implant services to patients in an effort to keep income levels steady.
The problem is that many dentists take as little as two days of training and then return to their office and provide dental implant procedures on their patients, said Williamsport, PA dental implants specialist Dr. David DiGiallorenzo, who has specialized in periodontics and dental implantology since 1995 and speaks internationally on the topics.
“Dentistry has eleven specialties, and dentists have a general scope of practice once they finish dental school,” said the Williamsport, PA periodontics expert, adding that specialists often train an extra three to five years after dental school, frequently earning an additional master’s or doctoral degree in their specialty in the process. COLLEGEVILLE AND PHILADELPHIA, PA – Scientists and doctors who study the effects of stress on the body have determined that it can disrupt nearly every system in the body, and the mouth is not immune.
Published literature has identified a relationship between periodontal disease and stress, said Philadelphia, PA dental implants expert Dr. David DiGiallorenzo.
Fifty-seven percent of the studies included in a review published in a past issue of the Journal of Periodontology showed that there is a definite relationship between periodontal disease and depression, stress, loneliness and anxiety, according to the American Academy of Periodontology. (more…)
COLLEGEVILLE AND PHILADELPHIA, PA – Bad breath is something none of us want, but all of us get once in a while.
Bad breath can be caused by something as simple as eating garlic, or it can be an something serious, such as periodontal disease.
“The odor emitted from the mouth of someone with periodontal disease is pretty distinctive and most periodontists know the patient has gum issues even before they conduct the full exam,” said Dr. David DiGiallorenzo, a Collegeville, PA periodontist.
Periodontal disease rates second behind oral dryness in causing bad breath, said DiGiallorenzo, who also is a Williamsport and Collegeville, PA dental implants expert. (more…)
COLLEGEVILLE AND PHILADELPHIA, PA – Technological advancements are changing the way many dental procedures are performed, and one area where that is particularly evident is in dental implants.
Advances in nano technology, have facilitated bone cells to adhere to titanium surfaces faster, thus enabling Dr. David DiGiallorenzo to place healthy, beautiful teeth into the mouth in one visit.
DiGiallorenzo, a Collegeville, PA dental implants specialist, has performed these procedures for 15 years. A full mouth may take a half-day, while a single tooth replacement can be completed in less than two hours. (more…)
COLLEGEVILLE AND PHILADELPHIA, PA – Lots of young adults are getting oral piercings these days as a form of self-expression, but studies show that these artistic gestures could lead to some long term oral health risks.
Case reports dating back 11 years have found that oral piercings can cause gum recession, which can lead to decay and periodontal disease, according to the American Academy of Periodontology.
Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that destroys the tissue that supports the bone that holds the teeth in place, according to the AAP.
Collegeville Periodontist Dr. David DiGiallorenzo has treated patients with gum recession and chipped teeth that resulted from piercings in the tongue, lips and cheeks.
“Many people looking to express themselves artistically turn to piercings instead of tattoos because they feel as though the jewelry can be taken out later, whereas tattoos are permanent,” said DiGiallorenzo, who has a Williamsport and Collegeville periodontics practice. “Unfortunately, we’re finding that piercings can leave lasting effects long after the jewelry is removed.” (more…)
COLLEGEVILLE AND PHILADELPHIA, PA – Losing teeth shouldn’t mean losing self-confidence and the ability to eat certain foods.
And yet, that is what happens to many Americans when they lose their teeth due to trauma, periodontal disease or decay and replace them with traditional dentures.
Although dentures can provide an natural-looking alternative for missing teeth, wearers often complain about their difficulty in eating, speaking and even smiling while wearing them, said Philadelphia dental implants specialist, Dr. David DiGiallorenzo. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
For years, DiGiallorenzo, a Philadelphia periodontist, has used dental implants to provide patients with a better alternative to traditional dentures that allows a person to smile, speak, eat and even kiss with confidence. Known as implant supported overdentures, these dentures use precise dental attachments to hold the denture in place and prevent it from slipping. (more…)

The condition of congenitally missing teeth also is referred to as tooth agenesis. Studies show that nearly 3 percent of people in the United States are born with missing upper lateral incisors. Slightly more than 3 percent are missing second molars, and almost 20 percent of the American population is born without third molars, according to dental health Web site.

COLLEGEVILLE AND PHILADELPHIA, PA – Snoring has been the scourge of many a marriage throughout history.
But in addition to being an annoyance to spouses, snoring can be a sign of a more serious problem: sleep apnea.

Pennsylvania Periodontist Dr. David DiGiallorenzo treats many sleep apnea patients by fitting them with a device called Silent Nite, which is manufactured by Glidewell Laboratories. (more…)
COLLEGEVILLE AND PHILADELPHIA, PA – Your gums could be killing you.
The truth is that chronic oral inflammatory disease- or periodontal disease- can do more than cause tooth loss, said Collegeville Periodontist Dr. David DiGiallorenzo. It can kill you.
It is estimated that almost 75 percent of Americans suffer from any of a number periodontal disease forms and aren’t even aware of it, according to the American Dental Hygienists’ Association.
“Millions of Americans have loose teeth, bleeding gums, sore teeth, bad breath and shifting teeth, and all of these things are signs of periodontal disease,” said DiGiallorenzo, a Collegeville, PA dental implants specialist. “What’s particularly alarming is that only about three percent will receive treatment.”
The majority of people go undiagnosed as a result of not routinely visiting a dentist and not having a full periodontal probing and full set of X-rays. Of those who do get diagnosed, they frequently don’t follow through with treatment because gum disease typically doesn’t hurt and either they ignore recommendations, or they are under-treated, he said.

PHILADELPHIA, PA – There is a link between nutrition and periodontal health and the Philadelphia, PA periodontists in Dr. David DiGiallorenzo’s Collegeville and Williamsport practice are working to educate patients on that important link.
DiGiallorenzo, a Philadelphia, PA periodontist, introduced two lines of nutritional products- Isagenix and NuVerus- into his practice recently in an effort to help patients build their immune systems and fight gum infections.
The role of diet and nutritional factors in the development of periodontal disease is unclear, but researchers have learned that the defense mechanisms of the saliva and gingival tissues can be affected by nutritional health, according to an article published by the American Dental Hygienists Association.
